Meeting 1: Live coding exercises

Meeting 1: live coding

Work in materials/live-starter/ using the root launch page. The starter runs at its first checkpoint. Keep one browser tab and the Console open; save and refresh after each change. Your instructor will release the reference solution after an attempt.

L1. Trace loading and change the welcome (10 min)

Find core, plugins, helper, and app.js in index.html. Explain the order. Change the welcome sentence, save, refresh, and show the new text.

Success: The browser shows your edit and no Console errors.

Hint (after an attempt): Script tags execute in order; the app uses globals supplied by earlier scripts.

L2. Run a three-trial timeline (15 min)

Add fixation and responseTrial after welcome. Press a valid key, try an invalid key, then repeat without responding.

Success: Welcome → fixation → response. The response trial ends on F/J or after 2000 ms.

Hint (after an attempt): The trial objects already exist; edit the array passed to jsPsych.run.

L3. Metadata and timeout (10 min)

Change response text, deadline, and task label. Inspect the response row. Download JSON.

Success: Changed fields match the new trial; a timeout has null response and null RT.

Hint (after an attempt): The finish panel is supplied infrastructure. It is not a jsPsych trial.

Before moving on

Explain one changed line to a partner and inspect the relevant saved row. Record the first unresolved error rather than copying an entire replacement script.

Download this meeting’s starter files, or use the matching folder in the whole student course download.

A small example before the full task

Use the predict–run–explain practice sheet and the editable examples in the browser slides. Each isolates one idea, shows the resulting data, and includes an independent transfer question.
