Evaluating community extensions

The jspsych-contrib repository is an entry point for community plugins and extensions. Examples include device-motion and MediaPipe face-mesh integrations. These are optional topics, not required competencies or bundled course dependencies.

Before adopting one, identify its documented jsPsych compatibility, release/version, dependencies, input permissions, data format, license, and maintenance activity. Run its minimal example in the intended environment. A package name or impressive demo does not establish measurement validity.

Five-minute appraisal

Choose one package or discuss a hypothetical device-motion extension. Answer:

  1. What physical event is measured, and in which coordinate system/unit?
  2. What hardware, permission, and browser support are assumed?
  3. What data would you need to distinguish sensor failure from no movement?
  4. How would you pin its version and preserve a working example?
  5. What could you complete with the core plugins if the extension failed?

Strong answers name concrete dependencies and a pilot test. “It is official/community” is not itself a data-quality argument. Both official and community tools require checking against the intended research use.
